Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde is a production bursting with relevance for student audiences. The cine-theatre form being developed by writer and director Kip Williams and collaborators, (seen first in their production of The Picture Dorian Gray in 2022) is a study in Multidisciplinary Theatre, as well as a beautiful example of adaptation. English links include Crime Fiction and Victorian Gothic genres, as well as culture shaping texts. Drama links include a sophisticated blending of several forms and styles, alongside Production in Performance. 

CONTENT SUITABILITY

This production is best suited to Upper Secondary students in Year 11 & 12, due to content including adult themes, drug use and suicide. The production also includes the use of theatrical haze.

Manifesto is an exemplar work for Dance and Music students. Stephanie Lake’s latest offering since bringing us Colossus in 2020 combines choreography and composition in beautiful synchrony, with plenty to be found for students of both disciplines. Dance links include evaluating choreographic intention, structure and techniques, responding to dance, understanding dance in society, and many more. Music links include music literacy and musical analysis, amongst others. Design concepts and technologies are also a key part of Manifesto’s creation and performance.  

CONTENT SUITABILITY

The content of this production is best suited to Lower & Upper Secondary students in Years 7 – 12, however discretion should be used for younger students. The production includes the use of theatrical haze as well as very loud sounds from live drummers.

Perth Festival and Stephanie Lake are collaborating to bring WA Schools a pilot digital learning experience built around Manifesto. Kronos Quartet’s 50 For the Future project is a world class example of inter-generational and inter-cultural exchange, and their performance as part of the 2023 Perth Festival is no different. As they perform alongside local, pre-professional quartets, students will have an opportunity to see themselves in a not-too-distant-future represented onstage next to some of the world’s finest musicians. The opportunities for engagement in a Music curriculum are vast, as well as offering a prime example of contemporary Noongar musical practice, speaking to the cross-curriculum priority of First Nations knowledge. Following in the cross-cultural collaborative legacy of shows such as Black Ties (part of Perth Festival 2020), Hide the Dog provides rich opportunities to address the ACARA cross curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, culture and knowledge. Engaging with this performance also provides opportunities in Drama, English/Literacy, History and the capabilities of Critical and Creative Thinking, Science and Environmental Studies, through its playful use of palawa and Māori histories and knowledge.

A gender-flipped adaptation of a classic, Cyrano is another example of adaptation and interpretation. This innovative Melbourne Theatre Company production offers Drama and Literature cohorts opportunities for analysis of language, design and use of theatrical styles, including conventions of Epic Theatre, Musical Theatre and Comedy. A love letter to hope, desire and overcoming loneliness, Cyrano celebrates the irrepressible magic of language, love and theatre.

This production is best suited to Upper Secondary students in Years 11 – 12, with a recommended age of 15+. In 2023 Perth Festival is inviting schools to engage with our Lotterywest Films program for the first time. Subject to availability, schools can book an exclusive viewing session of Lunana: A Yak In The Classroom at The Backlot Perth, creating creative learning opportunities in Literature, Media Production and Analysis and HASS. This is a unique opportunity to view this award-winning film with an audience made up exclusively of your teachers and students. A pre-recorded Q&A with members of the creative team will be available to schools accessing this screening opportunity.

CONTENT SUITABILITY

This film is spoken in Dzongkha and uses English subtitles. The content of this film is best suited to Upper Primary and Secondary students, with a recommended age of over 10 years without parental accompaniment. Content includes occasional coarse language and references to adult themes such as alcoholism and suicide. See Raising Children for further information on content suitability.

We encourage you to bring this artwork into your classrooms and participate digitally, and/or watch the live-stream of the work. Submissions will open from Thursday 27 October and students can create and contribute their response to the prompt ‘Between us...’. A dedicated webpage will collect the growing archive of responses, text accumulating and building over time to form the collaborative poem at the centre of the work. Links can be found in this work in Visual Arts, Literature, Digital Technologies and Drama through design
elements for performance. Select Creative Learning assets will be made available to extend learning in the classroom.

Due to a limited capacity and specialised intention the schools performances of Wonderbox are not on sale in the same manner as our other Creative Learning program offerings. It is important for Sensorium Theatre and Perth Festival to prioritise children with disability and for these children to make up at least 50% of the audience in each show. If you have a student group who fit this description, or know of a colleague who
does, please get in touch with us at schools@perthfestival.com.au to hear more about how to book, or investigate the General Public sessions available when the full program is released. Sensorium also offer some wonderful Professional Development opportunities for Teachers. Visit their website to learn more. A suite of assets designed to facilitate young people’s comfort and access to Wonderbox has been developed by Sensorium Theatre, including an app to help audiences to prepare. These will be made available in the lead-up to the performance.
